Memorial Day Presentation

At our regular meeting on May 25th, 2004, a Memorial Day presentation will be given by Cecil Latham on the life of Staff Sergeant Vernon Christensen.

As a young man from Montana he joined the Army Air Corps in World War II.  During a span of just over one year he would complete 49 missions as a top turret gunner on a B24 bomber, be forced to bail out on his 50th mission, spend time in a Nazi prisoner of war camp and endure the infamous “Black Death” march across Poland and Germany before finally being rescued by American forces.

Please ask any veterans to be our guest for this exciting presentation of this young soldier’s remarkable story of courage and bravery in the latter days of World War II.

Frontier Days

Frontier Days is scheduled for the 3rd (Saturday) and 4th (Sunday) of July 2004 at Old Settlers Park.  Although Dick Reid has been working with Dominic DiGesualdo and has accepted responsibility for coordination of the set-up, operation and take-down of the Sertoma Beer Booth Concession, Dick has also volunteered to accept responsibilities as our Treasurer effective 1 July 2004 and will be heavily involved in setting up a new accounting system.  We are looking for someone to step-up and assume Dick's Beer Booth coordination responsibilities for this year so he can concentrate on improving our financial accounting system.  If you are interested, please contact Dominic or me as soon as possible.

Hope

HOPE is the thing with feathers

That perches in the soul,

And sings the tune without the words,

And never stops at all,

And sweetest in the gale is heard;

And sore must be the storm

That could abash the little bird

That kept so many warm.

I ’ve heard it in the chillest land,

And on the strangest sea;

Yet, never, in extremity,

It asked a crumb of me.
